First Responder Gear

First Responder Duties

First responders are often placed in high pressure emergency situations and having the right first responder gear is essential. The Homeland Security Act of 2002 defines first responders as those who protect life, evidence, property, or the environment during the early stages of an emergency. First responder professionals range from firefighters and law enforcement personnel to medical professionals, utility workers and public health professionals.

Each first responder requires varying duties when reporting to a call. For example, an EMT will administer first aid, immobilize someone who is injured, and communicate with other responders regarding patients. A firefighter locates and rescues civilians, puts out the fire, and also administers CPR or first aid if needed. A Police officer’s duty when responding to an emergency involves restoring public order, administering first aid, and preventing crime.

Workplace Opportunities

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that more than 236,000 people worked as EMTs and paramedics in 2015. Meanwhile, more than 318,000 people worked as firefighters, and more than 653,000 worked as members of the police.

Training Required

In order to qualify to be an emergency responder, you must have a high school diploma or G.E.D. Firefighters and police officers typically receive training after being hired; however, both are now preparing applicants through college programs (i.e. two-year associate programs).

Those interested in EMT first responder professions take a slightly different path. These programs combine classroom instruction, lab work, and internships to provide an all-encompassing curriculum. You can expect instruction on cardiac and respiratory care, anatomy, physiology, patient assessment and pharmacology.

When you enroll in law enforcement programs, you can expect to learn how to project authority, prevent crime and maintain public order. Material covered will involve firearms training, critical decision-making, and crisis intervention. Students gain their expertise through lab simulations, classroom instruction, and practicum courses.
